It’s explained & shown in the beginning when Celine is narrating that souls eaten by gwima are turned into demons. Also there’s most likely 3 types of demons that we know of as of right now………….1st is the grim reaper demons (aka the saja boys which r based on the Jeoseung-saja in Korean mythology) their job is to escort the monster looking demons through openings in the honmoon to collect souls therefore creating more demons and making gwima stronger……….the 2nd type are the ones i previously said the saja boys escort through the honmoon that dont look human but more monster like………the 3rd type r demons we see gwima send out to attack huntrix in herds multiple times throughout the movie and the most when huntrix sung “what it sounds like” they’re almost like a hivemind and their bodies have no face, completely gray.

This issue is addressed by the conversation Rumi has with her mentor befor the final fight, when she say that an hoonmoon where people can't be fully loved for who they are is not worty to be saved. Then just before the fight, when she face gwi-ma directly she states that she's going to destroy it to make a new one (presumably one who's intollerant with who does evil but tollerant of others). Also it's confermed by the fact that she wasn't going to kill jinu, he sacrificed for her

There are different kinds of demons the ones that they normally interact with and hunt seem to be the ones that are born or created as Demons. But the one in the traditional black outfits( I am blanking on what they are called) were humans that sold their souls.

THANK YOU. The origin of the demons is such an issue that just never lines up. Like Mira and Zoey learned empathy but only for Rumi despite other demons being forced to attack or die. It really feels like a “token” friend

i had the same thought!! i thought they would at least try to free the other demons… alas😭 but also rumi’s shame IS the patterns themselves, that’s why they kept getting worse over the years as she continued to hide them and feel ashamed of them

hmmm, assuming its genetic is a bad faith take i think. if we look at jinu and his immediate assumption that rumi "did something" to get her marks, I think its pretty safe to say that humans become "corrupted" into demons. clearly her position as a human demon is new territory for everyone, considering selines lack of knowledge about her marks. that along with the themes of guilt and shame that rumi is forced to grapple with as a result of actions that were not her own-- i think it may be intended as a reflection of generational trauma, and the very intense and sometimes obligatory connection to family that is common in many asian cultures. showrunners have said very plainly that there is A LOT more story to be told, if given the opportunity, and I think we will have more clear answers about Rumi.

I think it's something that's implied to be something more akin to demons being controlled by the main villain. it reminds me of the red death from HTTYD. the dragons themselves aren't 'evil' but they can be forced to do bad things. same with demons. and the message of 'kill app demons' I feel is explicitly fought against in the movie. it's clear at the end their mission isn't 'kill all demons' but 'kill the demons that are trying to harm people'

@David Holmgren: Her being ashamed of her heritage is a metaphor for being ashamed of something you can’t control. I grew up in a white family and I’m biracial and I grew up with the sentiment. You’re more white than you are black. It’s not directly saying being black is a bad thing but to a child or somebody like Rumi who grew up hearing demons are bad it’s something that she would absolutely be ashamed of. I was ashamed of being biracial and didn’t even claim being black until I was in my late 20s and I still struggle with shame. I’m very proud of my black heritage in the ancestors that came before me and fought for what I have, but that doesn’t take away from years and years of it being failed in my head that this is bad that being black equals negative. I relate hard with her.

Here’s my perspective. In the movie, it shows the hunters use their voices to reach the hearts of everyone in the world. Everyone’s soul glows, representing their belief or faith in what the hunters are singing. The hunters use the energy from their “fans” faith to seal the honmon, creating a barrier from demons. Celine explained to Rumi that the hunters are not supposed to show their weaknesses or fears because The hunter generation before them believed vulnerability can affect the strength of the honmon. Which can provide gwima the chance to manipulate peoples faith for his own personal gain. As we saw in the movie, part demon or not, all 3 hunters were able to be manipulated by gwimas voice or gwimas demons because they lost faith in what they believed. Rumi stated she did not want to protect “this” honmon. I believe that’s because if none of the hunters can show their vulnerability to others and accept themselves, they cannot be confident in who they are or what they believe resulting in loss of their faith. Then they all run the risk of being manipulated by gwima and their souls corrupted. Then Rumi says they can create a new honmon. Singing of how they can come together with all their insecurities, weaknesses, fears and accept themselves for who they are created confidence and trust between them. Which provided the “fans” the same belief and created a new honmon free of judgement. If everyone is secure in who they are and their faith strong, there is no room for gwima to manipulate them. Essentially giving the overall theme of generational curses and breaking them.

it seems like the type of demon that jinu is is more special than all other demons we see because he his still full cognizant. the other saja boys are not truly "human" as jinu is and are more like puppets that seem more "human". we also see rumi try and talk with other demons and see if they still have any humanity or feelings in them but they dont respond at all. its also not stated how much of the demon parts got passed on from her father because its likely she was born without any marks at all and theyve only truly spread the more shame shes felt about them and the need to hide them. so really there is only likely 2 demons we know of that could feel any sort of emotion or potential gain any redemption and its likely something to do with how gwi-ma turned them and maybe something to do with gwi-ma letting jinu keep his voice as that is shown to be very important to this world and stopping demons

1: The patterns are an inherent part of Gwi-Ma, he says so in the movie "one of the hunters holds my mark but I have no control over her. 2: The patterns grant special power, hence Rumi's ability to teleport near the end of the movie. 3: The patterns are ingrained in their skin and spread like a disease depending on how much shame and misery you have, meaning that they possibly do integrate into the marked's biology as humans don't remain humans but become hybrids as they turn demon. 4: Rumi possibly inherited the genetic marker, but because she came into possession of it through unusual means (birth) Gwi-Ma has no control over her indicating possible immunity. 5: The hatred of all demons isn't presented as heroic, in fact it's a recurring theme that their traditional beliefs were wrong hence why the Honmoon turns multicolored at the end of the movie instead of Golden as originally planned allowing for some kind of limited passage. if you read my paragraph, thank you, this movie leaves a lot to be desired and a lot of things depend on speculation for now, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Yeah this movie was very fun but I think it would’ve been better as a series or a longer movie. I know I shouldn’t be too critical over a kids movie that’s ultimately about friendship and bravery, but a lot of the stuff surrounding the demons was confusing to me

I see it as less physical and more emotional, the patterns being more literal the sins the person bears becoming so hard to bear they come out, the king just being that nagging voice that said sins are bad

So I actually had some questions about this, mostly because of how some of the language the girls use talks about sending the demons back to suffer with Gwi-ma for eternity. It makes me think that the demons just respawn in the demon realm when they are killed on earth. I think that whether a demon remains a demon in the movie all comes down to how they identify demon-ness by "patterns." These are shown as marks on the body and could easily have been described as cursed marks or something along those lines, but they use a word that implies some level of personal agency. Jin gets his soul back and becomes human again when he chooses to stop letting his shame and regret define him/control him. Rumi is a bit different because, although she feels shame about her patterns for most of the movie, they were always something out of her control that she didn't need to be ashamed of. Yet she is also allowed to heal and reclaim her humanity when she stops letting that shame define her. I definitely think that other demons could be redeemed, but it is hard to change the "patterns" of your thoughts and behaviors.

Demons are either created by having your soul taken (as seen in the opening moments of the movie) or willingly selling your soul to gwi ma. Either way demons are created when gwi ma takes souls. It would be logical if killing the demons would set the souls free, especially since the weapons the girls carry are also ceremonial/ritual weapons

i don't think it's genetic. it's implied that rumi's birth was connected to a lot of regret and shame from her mother and celine, and she internalized it so much that she believed herself to be a mistake. if she hadn't been raised as a hunter I'm sure she would've been corrupted by gwi-ma way sooner.

completely agree. like the fact that we came out of the movie confused about this stuff at all speaks to a pretty basic failure of the movie to define the rules of the world imo? don’t get me wrong, i really enjoyed the movie, it just felt like the lore really needed to be explained a lot more in order for us to understand how demons even work in this universe

THANK YOU for this rightful critique, I was also puzzled with this aspect and a general lack of a story overall! Like, don't get me wrong, the songs are cool and the animation is nice, but I am puzzled why people praise this movie this much when the story itself and it's characters are so undeveloped! My theory is that the movie Industry is in trouble so much that nice songs and nice animation is all it takes to make something great in the eyes of the public. TBH I have so many questions after watching this movie! Can we get real story arcs for Mira and Zoey? We know close to nothing abt them, actually. Mira was a wild child (how exactly? can we learn more?) whose family rejected her and Zoey is a people pleaser who worries she is too much and not enough. Feels a bit surface level and generic, right? Can we see Celine and her relationship with the girls for more than 1 minute? Even the tiger had more screen time! Also we know absolutely nothing about all the Saja boys, they don't even have names, and one is called just ABS! Lol! Also the magic system of becoming hunters, can we learn about that? There are only 3 hunters for the whole world, or for the whole country? It feels like they barely can cover one city. Again: So! Many! Questions!

I'm pretty sure Rumi DOES fit into the shame slot, because regardless of if she actually has something worthy of shame, she is still ashamed of her patterns, because for her entire life, Celine has put it in her head that all demons are inherently evil, a d that her demon side is something to hide and get rid of.

Jinu is old. It is time for him to move on. It seems like these demons eventually have to move on. Sometimes, the monsters are humans. Have you seen the world lately? It is simplified by how human they look. Sometimes, ppl cross a line.

Idk if it matters that much. There are at least 2 types. Humans that become demons, and demons that have never been human. The movie thematically is about learning to heal from shame/guilt/generational trauma. Don’t need to know more for the film to work. Rumi’s heritage and the concept of the honmoon needing to be reforged was to represent generational trauma and how to heal from it. Jinu’s past was to address overcoming your feelings of shame/guilt. You can probably do something with the idea of demons feeding on souls equating to these negative emotions weighing down on you and the people around you until you fall and become a demon as well.
