How to Get Shoulder Flexion in Flaccid Stage After Stroke | Bobath Placing Technique
 📝 Caption
💪 From zero movement to active holding!
Learn the safe Bobath/NDT Placing Technique for regaining shoulder flexion in the flaccid stage of stroke recovery — step-by-step, safe, and effective for reducing complications like shoulder subluxation and frozen shoulder.
 📖 Description
In this video, I demonstrate a clinically proven method to help stroke patients in the flaccid stage regain shoulder movement — specifically shoulder flexion — using the Bobath “Placing Phenomenon” technique.

The patient is lying supine, relaxed. I use two-hand control — one hand on the proximal humerus/scapular area to guide the shoulder blade into proper upward rotation and posterior tilt, and the other hand on the forearm/wrist to direct the arm’s path.

We slowly lift the arm in the sagittal plane, preventing shoulder impingement and protecting the joint capsule. At the end position, the limb is “placed” into the desired posture, giving the brain and muscles proprioceptive input to encourage activation. This method also prevents long-term stiffness, pain, and joint damage.

💡 Key points for safety & success:
 • Always support the scapula & humeral head — prevents subluxation.
 • Slow, controlled movement — avoids spastic reactions or injury.
 • Visual & verbal cues — ask the patient to watch their hand and try to hold the position.
 • Progress gradually — from passive placing to active-assisted holds, then resisted movement.

This technique is especially helpful for:
✅ Acute & subacute stroke patients with flaccid upper limbs.
✅ Preventing shoulder subluxation in the early stages.
✅ Reducing the risk of frozen shoulder.
✅ Teaching the brain-muscle connection during neuroplastic recovery.
 🎯 Benefits
 • Restores safe shoulder mobility early in recovery.
 • Provides strong proprioceptive feedback to re-educate movement.
 • Protects the shoulder joint from early complications.
 • Improves patient confidence and participation.
 • Can be integrated with PNF, Motor Relearning, and Brunnstrom progression later.
