Rule of thumb for me: if BookTok says a book is slow or bad or boring, it’s probably a good book.

The “let’s review the 50 books I read in July” thing really gets me. Like yeah I’m sure you are reading but damn are you actually READING?

overdescribing things, so they end up 300 pages. it's exhausting to read these books

I appreciate this conversation but at the same time I think it’s important for readers to also take accountability for not doing their own research or using discernment. Speaking for me personally, I have read over 100 books this year and I can say only about 12 have been under 3.5 stars. I follow Booktokers that read diversely and across a variety of genres and I also have come to learn which tropes, aspects of a story, and authors are not for me. I definitely agree that books have become similar to fast fashion but I would actually venture to say that’s a lower percentage than may appear on social media. There are some amazing books being published every month but not all take BookTok or Bookstagram by storm or some people get bogged down in only genre and miss out.

yes, they're either overdescribing things or the book is overly S*xual. you can't even pick up a feel good book without it having something s*xual in it.

This is why I have started reading books from the 70s-2000. I should not find more depth, meaning and nuance in 1970/80 pocket book novels than 21st century literary fiction.

I feel like ever since Acotar, almost every author is taking that cheap route and giving mediocre plot for plot content and it’s like guys…why are we doing this? There are soooo many tropes we can explore. We don’t need another Feyre and Rhysand.

My theory is the majority of booktok is women who didn’t grow up reading, and the first book they read was some viral ‘spicy’ booktok romance or romantasy. So, in a sense, authors are catering to people who haven’t cultivated their reading comprehension over a lifetime of reading, and therefore they are spoon-feeding readers ‘spice’ and cobbled together tropes. I no longer trust any viral booktok book unless it gets a stamp of approval from a select few booktokers I have vetted over time. I have a second theory that many of these non-lifelong-reader women who were lured in by ‘spicy’ books have gone on to become authors of trash romantasy books themselves.

It’s like all the books being written are hoping they all get picked up for cheap Netflix shows/movies. Not only that but the covers are horrible. They all feel like really bad fanfic novels.

Hi! Author here. In order for many of us to be trad published, we have to over explain. As a Black author I was expected to explain Blackness to white people. I refused and self published but self pubbing more literary work makes it harder to be discovered 🙃

for me, it's SA. why does everything have to have SA. I blame 50 Shades of Grey it started off as Twilight fan fiction. not even good Twilight fanfic. they changed the names and published it. the rest is history
