I do directed drawings all the time in my pre k class. It’s crazy to compare their drawings from the beginning of the year to the end.

Kindergarteners don’t know where to start and so they need guidance for how to even begin to draw things

no. I had to sub in a 9th grade art class and every last kid said, “I’m not an artist” and I could barely get them to draw a flower. What happens between 1st grade, when every child believes their art is great, and 9th grade??? oh yeah, they didn’t learn anything to help build their confidence

As an art teacher, this is exactly what I do to introduce our shapes unit! See the shape, name the shape, use the shapes, tell me what you made with your shapes. “Reading” images in art, looking closely for things to identify like lines, shapes, colors and objects and then discussing what story the artist might be telling us with their art is all part of how I support pre-reading skills in the art room. The more we overlap our content the better it is for learning!

Your illustration unit has been a great addition to my class. I agree, you need to learn the basic foundation of anything and then you put your twist on it. Example- an architect has to learn the foundation of building and then they create their versions. A chef as well. My students produce more and are so proud of themselves! Its better than the expectations from the curriculum we have to follow. I intergrate it seemlessly. Cant wait to use the book this year.

This unit changed the game for us in writing!!!! They enjoy writing, are more successful with the academics, and actually further develop their artistic/creative skills after they all get the basics!

Our family friend is a 2nd grade teacher and she is literally teaching making a 6 word sentence describing a picture they drew. Shapes are important to reading and writing!

When I taught kindergarten, I LITERALLY taught and entire unit on exactly this. Kids aren’t typically born with the ability to discern what shapes a whole picture is made up of. You have to break it down into the smaller pieces for them and then they can see how those pieces come together in the “bigger picture”. This is amazing, I love it!

I teach preschool. Our curriculum includes a “journal” where children need to draw a picture relating to the theme of the week. We just did insects. After learning about bees they needed to draw a picture of a bee and tell something about their picture. I have to teach them how to do this. Teach them how to draw a bee. So when they go to kinder hopefully they can draw a simple picture and write about it.
