They should be completely potty trained and not in diapers or pull-ups during the day and they should be able to hear the word no as a boundary without losing it.

The schools (even the one I work for) have the parents fill out what name their child goes by and that’s used - sometimes it’s even their middle name or nickname

practice opening lunch boxes and lunch wrappers at home a week or two before school starts. Some of those bento boxes are hard and some kids are too shy to ask for help and then lunch goes by and they didn’t even get theirs open.

I didn’t know my 3yo knew my given name until we were at a family event & I didn’t hear him say “Mama!” So he yelled my name at me. Everyone lost it laughing 🤣

Should know their name (be able to recognize it and tell it to someone) and *respond* to it (e.g. look at someone who calls it, say “that’s me”, etc.)

They also need to be able to communicate basic needs to peers and adults (taking home language and disability into account of course).

Yes to all of these! I’ve worked at preschool classrooms, and I’ve worked in primary classrooms (my province, calls it grade primary instead of kindergarten), and children who know those five things are really thrive!

also!!!! they should be able to eat their food in less time then they are given. If they have 20 minutes to each lunch, you need to practice them eating in like 15 minutes! as that time often includes walking to the cafeteria and sitting down.

My 3yr old does 3/5 sometimes 4/5 of these and really close to getting the fifth one we get dressed and undressed by ourselves just not potty. We are working hard in this house.
