@jennrekmed: In this case in a plural effusion, we want to re-expand the long slowly. In a collapse lung of course we want to put in a chest tube and expand the lung as much as possible. A thoracentesis typically takes 300 to 500 ML’s of fluid at a time which is 1 to 2 cups. Sometimes we can take 500 to 800 ML’s or 4 to 6 cups, but that is rare. In cases like that, where there is a lot of fluid, we’re going to typically want a chest tube over this procedure.
