@history: When x-ray technology was brought to shoe stores, it wasn't exactly a perfect fit. #HazardousHistory

Oh and as for Shoe salesmen becoming xray technicians, NO THEY DID NOT! The most advanced ones had 3 levels and timers that would last up to 20 seconds. This is hardly what a technologist had to do. Back then as a technologist you had to measure a patient, then make decisions about how much time you needed to get the proper exposure, done in fractions of seconds. Labeled (S) for seconds, then determine the best milliamperage of electrcity (mA) you would multiply the time in Seconds to the milliamps to come up with the (MaS) setting. Then they have to determine how much Kilovolts (shoe xray macines were set to about 50 kv.) The xray machines in hospitals would go from 40 to 200 kv. Both the MaS and kilovolts have to be right to make a good xray. Techs also need to know if they need a grid or buckey and all kinds of factors. Then they had to know how to develop the films. And no doctors were preforming xrays. Xrays were discovered and first used in 1895, xray techs started doing xrays by 1896. Doctors are lazy 😁 Sorry I am tired of the world thinking doctors do xrays or that a trained monkey can do them. Much of what techs do today is easier with photo timers that set the time (S) for you automatically, but hands and feet and other exams, are still done manually. We use milliseconds measurements now instead of fractions, I have used older fraction-timed machines 🧐 No fun, too much thinking for that. No shoe sales man "became an xray technician, because he could push a button and do a timed flouroscopic foot xray. Whew, I feel so much better now. If you read this to the end, God bless you.

In my seventies. I remember this machine in our local shoe store. My mother wouldn’t let us use it because she didn’t think it was necessary. Good choice.

I remember being told of these machines when I was in nuc med school. It was an historical example of how not to use radiation 😳 (thank goodness for regulations, eventually!)

I worked in a shoe store that opened its doors in 1901 and on the third floor storage area, sat that machine. I always wondered what it would be like to have used it. it was very fascinating.
