The Berkeley Pit is the remnants of an old abandoned pit mine which was formerly a mountain full of copper, gold, aluminum, arsenic and other metals. Parts of the city were eaten up as the mountain was destroyed to create a 1,000 foot deep pit. Entire neighborhoods were forced to relocate or destroyed entirely in the pursuit of profit. After it was abandoned, the pit filled with ground water which became toxic and unsafe until it was designated a Superfund site in 1987.
