Though I think it's also important to highlight that even if 'axe' didn't trace its origins back to England/Older English, and was a new development in black American English, that it would still be a completely valid dialectal feature and not 'wrong' in AAVE

It is very important to note that racists regularly use the “mispronunciation” of English by minorities goods as “evidence” of those groups mental and social inferiority. This has a long tradition in white supremecy.

I saw a linguist on here the other day explain how evolution isn’t the straight line people treat it as and it’s more like an evolving language with multiple dialects. We really need more linguists out here explaining things.

i dont even think something needs to be natural to a native English speaker to be correct tbh, like Norwegian english is an English dialect largely only spoken as a second language by native Norwegian speakers.

I’m Jamaican and we say ‘axe’ in Patois and in English too. I used to feel embarrassed when a white woman I worked for made me feel ‘uneducated’ for it, but learning the history and hearing this just made everything click. It was never about grammar. It was about power. Thank you for connecting the dots.
