Huh y’all can copy paste this I strongly oppose House Bill 4 as currently proposed. This bill represents a blatant attempt at partisan gerrymandering designed to manipulate the electoral process for political gain, not to ensure fair representation for the people of Texas.
Texas is one of the most diverse states in the country, with rapidly growing Black, Latino, and Asian populations. However, HB 4 fails to reflect this demographic reality. Instead, it redraws congressional maps in a way that weakens the voting power of communities of color, particularly in South Texas, Austin, Houston, and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. By targeting minority-heavy districts currently held by Democrats, the bill dilutes the influence of voters who deserve full and fair representation in Congress.
Moreover, the process behind HB 4 has lacked transparency and accountability. The maps were released suddenly, with minimal public notice and no opportunity for robust community input or meaningful debate. This approach undermines trust in our democratic institutions and disrespects the right of Texans to participate in decisions that directly impact their representation.
HB 4 also runs afoul of the principles set forth in the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits redistricting efforts that result in the disenfranchisement of minority voters. The proposed maps appear to prioritize partisan outcomes over compliance with federal law, and they invite costly legal challenges that Texas taxpayers should not have to fund.
Redistricting should be about fair representation not partisan advantage. Lawmakers should be drawing maps that reflect the actual population and its interests, not using the redistricting process as a political weapon. I urge members of the House Select Committee to reject HB 4 in its current form and instead develop a map that respects the will of the people, protects communities of interest, and upholds the integrity of our elections.
Texans deserve a democracy that works for everyone not just for those in power.
