@castlesofscotland: The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo begins today and will run throughout the month of August. This year celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Tattoo. The Tattoo is one of the most famous military tattoos in the world today. It is held each August as part of the annual Edinburgh Festival and attracts a combined live audience of around 220,000. Set on the esplanade, against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the 3-week event showcases and celebrates the skills and talents of military bands and display teams from the British Armed Forces, the Commonwealth and military teams from throughout the world. The Tattoo was inspired by a performance called ‘Something About a Soldier’, which took place at Ross Bandstand in 1949. In 1950 the first official Edinburgh Tattoo took place.
