Maryland is just a Misfit state we're too north to be south and too south to be north. But we're south of the Mason Dixon. We were like Switzerland in the Civil War.

When I first moved here, I told my husband (who was from another part of the world) that it must be a NASCAR weekend..... I had no idea it was the state flag. But ewww to learn it stands for the Confederacy..... does it really?

Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron Baltimore: Under his proprietary rule in colonial Maryland, laws were established that permanently enslaved Africans and their children. • Benedict Swingate Calvert: He owned a plantation (Mount Airy) of about 4,000 acres and had “upwards of 150 slaves” by the 1770s. • George Calvert (planter, Riversdale, late 1700–early 1800s): His plantation, Riversdale, employed enslaved labor. The number varied — from around 15 slaves early on to about 30+ in some years.
