Writing noir in modern times is a minefield for this reason. I’m writing about a corrupt sheriff’s deputy, but I’ve already had a couple readers say I shouldn’t endorse that kind of behavior (I don’t, he’s a villain protagonist).

The way this would absolutely destroy writing as an art form if we couldn’t create characters to tell a story. Writers are people watchers, we observe, characters are not always an extension or self insert of the author. Most times the really f up characters in many stories at least in mine, are based off of horrible people I’ve met through my life. I take their characteristics and slap a new face on them. That’s why they say be careful if you’re friends with a writer, your horrible behavior just might inspire an entire character in a story or book 😂

Couldn’t agree more! If there’s one thing I have noticed on TikTok, all of the so called ‘problematic’ authors have all been women. Granted there is a couple of videos about problematic male authors. But it is all largely female authors.

I remember people hated on Sokka from Avatar The Last Airbender (not a book, but this topic fits well) and they hated him because he's sexist... in the first season, mind you. and it drives me crazy that people will dog pile on authors and writers, hating on certain characters thus missing the whole point of that character and their arc.

Also, if you’re an author writing prejudice, I highly recommend a sensitivity reader to make sure you’re writing it in an authentic way! Never hurts to have a second pair of eyes!
