I have a hard time with ‘popular’ books, I think I’ve figured out what I like and I try to stay in that realm, not even genre because I like a wide variety.. but I need it to be compelling, emotionally intelligent, or deeply troubled characters, a really beautifully described setting, or a plot that keeps you turning pages. I usually follow specific peoples recs that have similar taste to me. That helps. And DNF anything that isn’t good before u waste too much time!

Try The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. It’s not romance focused but it’s a very good book

My library offers a personalized recommendation service! They ask really in-depth questions to ascertain likes/dislikes. I would recommend asking your local librarian if they can do this

I am having the same problem. Movies and tv have been mediocre at best and just plain bad the past handful of years. Maybe 10 years? It seems like books are also suffering. Music as well. Art in general lacks depth, soul, humanity. It’s all shallow and dumb.

The average US adult reads at a 7th-8th grade level. Books with massive numbers of positive recommendations are likely to be at that level or taste (your first book certainly fits this category). You’re more likely to find books you like if you follow one or two people you trust, rather than following the crowd if you’re looking for books of certain quality.

Publishers and most readers seem to choose books like they're choosing Netflix watches. They want predictability. They want simplicity. They don't care about readers who want more depth because they can only make thousands from the types of books we enjoy, not millions.

You’ve touched on something I’ve meant to explore for years. It’s unfortunate how much remarkable literature remains locked behind language. Despite the digital age, I still find myself ordering hard copies from abroad just to access the books that intrigue me (though I prefer digital). The issue isn’t the lack of great books, just the lack of English translations therof.

It’s harder to find good books .. another note is that reviews can be so full of people completely misunderstanding the concept of the book that just absolutely crushes the rating .. so now I just go in blind and hope for the best

I feel like such a snob, but I'm a high level reader that enjoys fantasy, but so many of the fantasy novels being published are 2000' YA reading level smut. I specify 2000's YA because if you read YA fantasy before that era, it is usually written so beautifully and originally. After The Hunger Games (good message, mid writing), everything became a copy/paste to be a best seller and prose took a back seat to easily digestible writing.

The first rule is if it's on a bestsellers list, it's automatically crap. The second rule is if they're a writer that shares TikToks of them reading their own books for Audible, it, too, is automatically crap. I have more, but I'm out of room.

I’m an avid reader and I have never seen any of those books you recommended. But then again I’m more of a nerd variety not popular girl variety. Maybe continue exploring? There are so many good books out there. Good luck 👍🏼

I’m usually not into the popular books either. A bookseller at your local indie bookstore might be able to recommend books to you! I was a bookseller for a while and loved talking with people about what they liked and suggesting titles they may enjoy reading next.
