I hate when parents brag that they “wish” their child would.

So you’re telling me that you’re driving and your child attacks you physically and hits you and can cause in life risking accident and you’re supposed to do nothing!? That little girl might be ODD but to me it look like she was just angry as if she didn’t get something she wanted, butit is not OK to attack someone who’s driving and that has somehow be handled in a way that they don’t forget or someone’s going to die

as a peds nurse with a BA in psych who worked in psych - ODD is very real but also wildly overdiagnosed bc parents dont want to hear theyre part of the problem

My sister has diagnosed ODD but my mom is 100% part of the problem. My sister knows that no matter what she does or how she acts, she still gets the iPad and still gets to go sleep over her friends house. Doesn’t matter what she does. She tried pushing me and my newborn down the stairs and then was allowed ice cream for dinner that night

Here we go round the prickly🍐 :
ODD is often caused by not accommodating children whom are PDA AuDHD. Only way to help is to make them feel safe & feel like they have some sort of control over their lives. signed a late dx'd PDAer who would've qualified as ODD during my teen years.

I think all parents should have Concious Discipline training.

Doesn’t that type of authoritarian, high control type of discipline often make it worse? That’s what I have observed with families I’ve worked with, but not sure if research shows that.

Corporal punishment doesn't work at all and especially not on a kid with ODD.

People who try to teach their children not to hit by hitting them is always the most ironic thing to see

Exactly! You don't do that by becoming an actual threat. These people think these kids are doing this on purpose. They'll never even try to understand.

Amygdala hijack…my son has DMDD and when his amygdala is hijacked you cannot regulate him by responding with anger.

Why are so many peoples first responses to stuff is to hit the child? Or that they wish their child would act up so they could…That’s not a good way to teach anything

I hate when parents say " I wish my child would do such and such" like why do you find joy in hitting your kids 😬

My niece was like that and was diagnosed with ODD. When she turned 19, she moved halfway around the world to get away from her mom—and honestly, I don’t blame her. My sister was the root cause of my niece’s mental health struggles; she’s a narcissist. Now that she’s away from her mom, my niece is living a much better quality of life. (And before anyone assumes otherwise, the family did try to intervene on her behalf, but there’s only so much you can do as outsiders.)

Thank you! You are the first person I’ve seen who described ODD as the brain misidentifying something as a threat. I personally have the theory that PDA and ODD are probably (mostly) the same thing.

So it sounds like getting angry just adds another threat to the situation. Which would worsen their response. Yikes 😬 poor kids

I found with my ODD son to discuss his behavior once he calmed down. Yelling and hitting just makes it worse. My son would calm down and then come to me to discuss his feelings. Now at 34 he still does this by coming over or calling me. It took a lot of patience with him and talking him about how to relax so his brain could think about things…I didn’t think it was working

Thank you for making these educational videos and spreading awareness, i wish more parents knew and realized the importance of teaching our kids rather than constantly scaring / punishing them, as parents and people who are around children, we have to heal and educate ourselves in order to teach kids how to process their emotions in a healthy way because we can’t teach them what we don’t know but the first step is caring and unlearning our own unhealthy behaviors ❤️
