@wildcorwin: My most profound memories from my 30 year career have been with my dear friends - Ventana Wildlife Society www.ventanaws.org & their remarkable efforts to save the critically endangered California Condor, the inspiration for the legendary Phoenix. Tragically in the 1990's, California condors became extinct the wild, only 22 individual survived in captivity. Today 366 now soar over our western skies. This was no easy task, it took herculean efforts. Unfortunately, all the federal funding for CA condor recovery has been stripped away. While there is a glimmer of hope for the CA condor, they're teetering once again on the edge of extinction from lead poisoning, bird flu, and habitat loss. I remember when I was in elementary school in the 80’s. There was a big campaign to save the California Condor. It was part of the curriculum in schools. Well, at least at my school it was. At one point there were only like 20 in the wild. They captured as many as they could to breed in captivity. There was a short time where there were none in the wild, until the ones in captivity were set free.

It breaks my heart to see funding stripped when the condor has fought so hard to come back from the edge before. These birds aren’t just wildlife, they’re living history. Like guardians of a sky we’re all connected to. Losing them would mean losing more than a species. Thank you for continuing to fight for their future. Save the California Condor🥹🪶❤️
