@jasondoroughauthor: Chekhov’s Gun is one of the most satisfying tools in storytelling when used well. Here’s what it means, how to use it, and why it makes your readers feel so smart when everything clicks into place. #writingtips #writingadvice #authortok #amwriting #storytelling #BookTok
it's also important to note that he was talking about plays specifically. there's very limited set space within a play, so there's practically no room for superfluous set dressing

It’s cool because they have thins like this in the movie Nope like the shoe but in the end it really doesn’t matter

I don’t like checkovs principle because it makes stories too predictable

I think an even more important principle is if you have a gun go off in act three, you better have shown it at some point in acts 1 or 2.

im new to writing so this might be already known but another concept for me of small details is have a character say something that doesn't seem meaningful but have it as the title for your last/most important chapter in the book

Explain Tom Bombadil then. Sometimes you can get away with adding stuff just to make your world feel real, you have to be careful how and when you do so

Great. This is smart writing advice. Gonna look back on my scripts again although I follow that principle in my writings. But... you'll never know...Thanks again!👍👍👍

As an editor, I tend to have to say - so a gun goes off in scene 3, can we put the gun on the wall in scene 1 please?

Perfect example is the sixth sense. All of those was there but the writer let us forget until the end and then you put it all together.

Good insight. I think the biggest modern day sign of this is Jujutsu Kaisen’s manga. There were many things left unanswered and lore unexplored.

Personally it annoys me when a book refuses to break this rule. Not everything you see needs to have importance or weight. When it does it often makes things feel too constructed.
Life is messy and incongruent. While being equally messy and incongruent would be a different set of problems, refusing all of it is just as bad.

I’m not sure if it’s the same but there’s a sort of anti-Chekovs gun in a lot of Vince Gillian’s writing. Props that are completely worthless to the plot are made significant thematically somehow. There’s a scene in Better Call Saul where Saul is having an ice cream but drops it when he has to do something urgent. When he returns the ice cream is melted and covered in ants. Plot-wise it’s completely useless but the two episode it’s in it’s given a very special focus. In the cold opening of the second episode it’s in its front and center and we spend a minute watching an ant crawl up it. Thematically it’s supposed to represent how Saul feels and where he is in his arc at that time. But it’s completely worthless to the plot.

or add it for misdirect which turns no purpose into a purpose so anything can technically have a purpose in writing

I used a dagger to explain someone’s past in one book. That was all I intended to do. Now I’m writing the third sequel and the same dagger is being used to foreshadow an even that will be pivotal for another character. All while this dagger is never used. I love the little things!
