🎶💙 "My Way" - Frank Sinatra Farewell recital of Kim Nam-Yun (1949–2023) 🎻 • Two months after Kim Nam-Yun's death in March 2023, this video began circulating again and reached 1.7 million views in Korea. For an entire generation of Koreans, it was their first real encounter with the teacher who trained the violinists now winning in Brussels, Indianapolis, and Hannover. The comments filled up with people who had never met her in person, but who grew up hearing her name every time one of her students won a competition abroad. No one in 2014 imagined that retirement recital would become a national tribute a decade later. • The song playing here was born three times. In 1967, it was a French chanson by Claude François about a marriage worn down by routine. The following year, Paul Anka bought the rights for a symbolic dollar and rewrote the lyrics in a single night, imagining what Sinatra would say if he were taking stock of his own life. Sinatra was in a professional crisis and considering quitting singing when he received the offer. He recorded it in December 1968 and walked out of the studio with what would become his signature song for the rest of his life, even as he spent decades saying he hated the piece. The melody that will make a teacher cry in this video began by telling the weariness of love that ends. • Conducting the encore is Kim Daejin, a former student of the honoree and now president of the Korea National University of Arts, the school she helped found in 1993. The 100 violinists behind him, in the choir section, are the generations she trained over the decades. Some were still teenagers that night. Others were just back from international tours to play with their teacher. The music was performed by a single body of 100 people who grew up listening to the same voice. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • • • #violin #violinist #classicalmusic #orchestra
