My husband is Child First forensics certified. You are 100% correct that all of this is so so normal and people do not understand how non linear victim disclosure can be. Victims are written off as lying when the fact is that it is a very non linear process.

if she's reading my comment, I agree with everything your Mom said. it took me 27 years to tell someone. people don't understand how hard it is to say it out loud. because when you do then it becomes real and you have to accept it yourself. you're so brave and we're all so proud of you 💛

For anyone still confused as why she remained silent, here’s another example. I protected my abuser (father) and lied about abuse until after he died. I lied because I knew my family would be broken up. And that seemed scarier. He never threatened me, never told me to not say anything. I was just a scared child.

This may seem like a lot, but have you considered surrendering your son to the state? Just focusing on your daughter?

People underestimate how complicated situations like this are. You can't usually resolve a very, very complex situation quickly, and not easily either. I wish more people would understand that sometimes you can do your very best in every possible way and things still don't magically become clear and easy.

She is a strong survivor. We experienced a similar childhood. You’ve got this life. Nothing that happened defines you.

Annie, this explanation makes perfect sense. Disclosure is very difficult, especially for children. You're daughter is so so strong and it sounds like she's very lucky to have you.

If she disclosed she would risk losing her only biological sibling. She had lost her first/Bio family already. She knew that when bad things happen in a home she loses her family.

People don’t understand that the sister likely felt like she didn’t want bad things to happen to her brother and felt a sense of fear and guilt over the thought of him facing consequences for what he did.

I’ve never disclosed my familia SA and I’m now 30. I don’t think anyone would believe me because my assaulter was a child who was also a victim of someone else during the time I was being assaulted. Thank you for believing her!

Mine happened 7 years. No one ever found out. It’s easy for it be hidden in the home. I was too scared to tell and it was done in a way to where it wasn’t explicitly done on my body part parts in a manner you could see damage. I just told at 28.

I fully understand how much it took for her to come forward. With hindsight, is there something you would suggest that parents do during the years of uncertainty to keep the potential victim safe?

That is such a painful situation. It was a no win scenario. No matter what you did you like a failure as a parent. It was impossible to protect both of them, because both of them needed to be protected.
