@blackbirdcoop: Replying to @c0g null I cannot begin to express to everyone how many millions of people are going to starve if our politics start putting ignorant people into positions of power RE: our food systems #chickenwars
ChatGPT is making these people think they are geniuses.

But but but who said man was meant to live above malnutrition? Perhaps that is merely natures way.

My aunt has raised chickens for decades. They, in fact, don’t “take care of themselves”. They actually are pretty terrible at that.

I’m gonna guess he’s never seen actual back yard chickens. I’d be happy to show him what those low maintenance, cheap back yard chickens are like. (I have a dozen and it’s not cheap, and it’s not easy, and I still can’t feed my family on it)

let's say, for arguments sake, that you let 1000 chickens free on a half acre. maybe they feed themselves, sure.
good luck finding the eggs.

I feel like not providing animals: livestock or not, with adequate nutrition is animal abuse. Any other in puts not needed? At any kind of scale even single family use ;esp if my neighbor is also doing the same) just scavaging isn’t enough

If they had grabbed any of those chickens in those areas, they would find a lot of feathers and not much meat.

Eggs used to be a seasonal food. Then we learned to add vitamin D to chicken feed.

I don’t think this person keeps chickens. First off the first thing that happens in feral chicken populations is they lose that “lay an egg every day” gene. It’s actually counter productive to survival without a feed bucket.

Deindustrialization has a few arguments for it, but we shouldn't pretend that it can be done without consequences. It would require a lot of people doing a lot of hard work, and we'd have to sacrifice a lot of conveniences to do it.

Also, the current domestic chickens are selectively bread for rapid growth and definitely not survival. It’s like comparing a pug to a wolf.

When I visited Ethiopia this summer (in Addis) I saw like 2 chickens in the whole city, because there is so little available extra resources and the high rate of diseases. One of the smaller villages my group has stayed in previously, if you used the chickens for meat, you had no eggs. They were guarded previously.

Survivorship bias at its best yet again. I wonder if these people ever wonder why the estimated annual human population growth has been between .1 and .3% up till the 1900s when it *magically* shot up to over 1%. Totally unrelated to the industrialization of food and medical industries

Honest question from curiosity, from someone who knows org psych - but not the agriculture industry.. what about organized/regulated decentralization? I know you’ve talked a bit about why that doesn’t work in the current climate, but what would it take to work? My brain goes to a massive singular network/union of farmers that have/own medium-ish (smaller than current, but not like homesteading) operations all over the place. Then the “cost” of being in union/network is that there is educated/informed decisions on who is farming what & where (to protect food supply/ensure efficient/eco friendly crops in the right places, e.g., shifting alfalfa away from CA). Then that same network/union could provide things that a lot of farmers don’t generally have easy access to e.g., health care, illness coverage, trade/supply deals at scale, etc. I am sure there are massive holes in the above example & I am not advocating for it, just giving a completely uniformed pitch as a starting place. I would love to hear your take on what would actually work. Particularly for getting farms, land, etc. (wealth) into the hands of more folks/all types of folks (including the ones who don’t general have access).

You made a really good argument that I agree with. I might argue that today's society over consumes meat and that we don't need as much cheap meat to be well fed and healthy. But that's not disagreeing with you, just my pedantic point that our society is over consuming and maybe meat and other industrial farmed things should cost more.
