He’s saying, people made an assumption and ran with it without giving them a chance to explain. The assumption later went on to be correct and they were wrong to be doing that in the first place. But what if it was innocent? The accusation would have led to destruction. Regardless of if it was innocent or guilty. But this time they were guilty. But what if??
