Booktube makes it seem like if you’re not reading 8, 10, 12 books in a month, you’re doing it wrong.

Madeleine Writes ✍🏼📚 :
Reading is not a race. The high quality books are the ones that make me slow down, pause and ruminate, go back and reread a line. Reread an entire paragraph. I won’t waste my time on junk books.

I saw a creator saying he was gonna read every single philosophy book (from the beginning) and he didn’t explain why so it seemed like he just wanted to read them for reading sake (to cross off). Someone in the comments had to explain to him philosophy should not be consumed like that. It is an experience. It is potentially life changing (positively or negatively, transcendentally etc).

i think this is my problem with most things. i treat everything like a to-do list and a lot of the times i end up getting nothing from it

little women/good wives is a good start for classic literature because it makes you laugh and cry but it also makes you ponder

Frankenstein was the first classic I read and it’s become one of my favourite books and really opened the door towards reading and understanding classics for me!

It took me 3 days to read one chapter in a book. And it’s not that the chapter was long, it was only 22 pages. But I kept rereading the same pages because it was so good. There were words I hadn’t heard before. It provoked thought. I understood something I didn’t when I kept reading then went back to it and that’s the joy in reading. My mind was changed about 5 times reading one chapter and that’s okay.

Absolutely agree! I think booktok has also created this discourse that you need to agree with everything an author says and read it as if they are preaching these things to you as you are in the current time and place. But it’s important to read a book within its time period and context and actually think about, “why did the author write this?” as you’re reading. Critical thinking is also about using external information such as the era a book was written and who the author was to inform which lens we adopt. Of course I’m all for going in blind and researching during or after reading but I don’t think you can truly appreciate a book as a whole without knowing the greater context surrounding it. Reading also isn’t always about agreeing with everything the author says and taking it at face value; it’s about opening yourself up and saying, “I want you to challenge me, to change my mind, to show me what I’ve never thought of before”. A book isn’t automatically “problematic” because it doesn’t align with modern social values. Perspective is so important and books are a treasure trove of perspectives dating back hundreds of years. It’s not very often you get to experience someone baring their soul to you through writing alone. Some things you take and some you leave. You won’t click with some and some you’ll have to dnf. But the point is you opened yourself up to a new perspective which you can bank into your library of information that determines how you understand the world! (Not just to bank it into your goodreads and reach your goal (which there’s nothing wrong with doing too))

What I love about reading, is the scenes that stick with me. Whether it be a woman drinking coffee on the roof, or a teenage boy describing a fight he got into. Not every scene needs to be examined, but that does not particularly mean you still cannot enjoy it.

I read Pride & Prejudice for the first time last month and really enjoyed it. I took two weeks to slowly read it and I watched the 2005 movie this weekend and loved it - I want to watch the ‘95 miniseries as well. I’ve just joined the Reddit group on it and been loving getting to speak with others on the themes and plot lines. It’s been nice being able to fully immerse myself in the book.
