@jtacfarms: 90 pounds of N is way too much fertilizer for foxtail millet. Do I have lots of tonnage to bake up? Yes. Do I also have boat load of pigweeds? Yes 😣. Pray for my swather. It’s not having fun with all these pigweeds. Now I just need to have this millet tested to make sure it doesn’t glow in the dark from high nitrates. (It won’t really glow. It’s a figure of speech). #fyp #fy #farmtok #agtok #ranchtok #kansas #newholland #hay #millet
We sprayed some chemical on our millet this year when it was 4 inches tall I do t remember the name of it and I would slowly just grind it off through the winter.

Did you consider spraying the millet with 2-4d to try and kill out the broadleaf when it was young?

That’s waterhenp, not pigweed.

Holy cow. That might take awhile to dry down.

I’d grind it all if it’s tolerable but definitely grind more straw or crp with it to lower the nitrates in the ground hay pile mix. 😬😬😬

If you’re concerned about nitrates, cut it higher off the ground. The nitrates will be higher in the bottom 6-8” of the plant

it always pays to grind. less waste and you can blend with better feed

hey dude cowboy :
it will grind and the protein in pigweed is good. cut it early and get some good cattle feed

I can say, if you bale it, water hemp takes forever to dry down. 😬😬

I wouldn't expect a nitrate problem since it grew up so big

Be interesting to see what it’s got for nitrates and how it tests for protein. I would assume with as much rain as we’ve had the nitrates shouldn’t be terribly high

are you gonna feed any of your calves out with your recalibrating the operation? that's probably all feeders would need for roughage. then you don't end up with pig weed seeds in a pasture. Just a feed bunk. or sell it to a feedlot. idk

I’d say chop it if you can otherwise it’s gonna be a nightmare to dry, especially if you’re like us in Iowa and have all this damn Canadian smoke

It will probably test high on nitrate. Most anytime my millet gets weedy it’s higher in nitrate. Not sure if it’s the weeds themselves or if they are just an indicator that you have problems.

You have to love pig weed. They will grow with no moisture or nutrients. We need there genetics breed into corn and soybeans
