I agree with keeping it to parents, family, counselor, mostly because it’s too easy to be influenced by other’s choices. But seeing everyone around you as competition is what has made my daughter’s high school a miserable place. There is zero sense of community because everyone is constantly focused on their own individual achievements at any cost.

💯 I have been preaching that to my son since 9th grade reminding him. He’s now a rising junior. They may be your friends but they ARE your competition! I taught my older daughter the same thing. Great advice… keep yours cards close to you…

Ughh, I wish someone had told me a year ago. Told my best friend I was applying to one of our best state schools because they met full-need. She later told me she applied just to see if she would get in while also saying she had no intention of attending. Guess who got accepted and who got waitlisted and later rejected? 🙃 Applying again to transfer this year but ngl I still cry myself to sleep about this.

And girl if you are at a tiny, small Town high school where the teachers, administrators and school counselors have children in your classes, competing for the same scholarship and school admissions, you definitely wanna keep them guessing! I hatr that my children are having to attend such a school but the backstabbing, cheating, stat and grade rigging has made them even more ready for the punches the real world will throw at them but gosh if it just isn't right!

It’s truly doesn’t matter if you tell your friends where you’re applying. The college person reading your application doesn’t know if “a” knows “b” and so forth.

Does this apply to University of California schools (for in-state students)? Like is there a quota per region of California? It’s all so competitive for these kids. My daughter attends a high achieving public high school in California.

Yes! my dad didn't tell my parents, her friends, etc. We didn't tell anyone, just said "she's applying to the places that best suit her". Left it at that! the water cooler talk w competitive parents is INSANE. Not just kids.
