In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Black babies and toddlers were reportedly used as live bait to lure alligators in parts of the American South. Hunters would place crying Black children near swamps to draw in gators for skin and profit. Even if the practice wasn’t widespread, the idea was widely accepted — so much so that it appeared in songs, postcards, toys, cartoons, and advertising. Our children were mocked, dehumanized, and reduced to objects of entertainment and utility. The phrase “gator bait” became a racist slur — one of the many ways America normalized anti-Black violence. 🧠 This is why our history matters. 🗣 This is why we teach. ✊🏾 This is why we remember. We honor our ancestors — even the smallest — by telling the truth. Thank you for just speaking on unspoken history that schools and most people don't talk about. I'm going to share this because the world honestly does need to remember all history. Honestly history has lessons within it and mistakes that can be learned from and I think it's truly amazing that you are speaking on the unspoken history that should be taught in schools and in the world to allow people to truly know the truth bad and good. I hope you don't stop teaching the world the beautiful and ugly true that is and has been hidden from a lot of people and especially kids who as we growing up as children ourselves should have learned in school.
