@martinlewismse: How much parents should save for their child to go to University. A snippet from my new ‘Ask Me Anything’ podcast. The Martin Lewis Podcast is available on BBC Sounds (+ Apple, Spotify & all the usual pod players)
London isn’t the only city that should have a higher maintenance loan. I went to Bristol and my rent was £700 pm without bills included (£8.4k for the year) And that wasn’t the cheapest 😔

If you earn more than £62,000 it is assumed that you can afford to pay for your child’s university education. Not taking into account the fact that people who have worked hard (and had their own uni debts) now have a larger mortgage (a benefit of having a nice home you have worked for) and paying 40% tax on anything above £40,000 in the face of being told that poorer people deserve bigger financial benefits. I do not disagree that people of lower income should be allowed to be educated but it should not be assumed that the people who have worked hard to earn a middle size income should automatically lose out on financial support.

I was widowed a year ago. I earn a decent wage and I am managing to cover all my bills on my own but will get the minimum amount to now support my son going off to uni. It’s not going to be easy at all but I can’t let the events of the last year determine his future! He is a trained lifeguard and hopes to work but it’s scary how I might make this work!

25000 is nearly minimum wage now so they will have to start repaying even if won’t get a job in a field of study. I checked my balance few days ago and it only goes up. I have only around 5k but still…

it's the lower middle class who take the flack, the whole loan system is broken. poorest kids get the full 9k, rich kids couldn't care less, and everyone else is stuck scraping for (possibly multiple) kids to pay their rent on the 4.5k the gvt gives us.
(you've also got to prove emancipation to be exempt - some kids won't see a penny of their parents' big salaries, but they've got no way of proving it. they're the ones working themselves to death out of school hours.)

Now let's throw into that mix, step parents. My income prevented my step children from going to uni as it counted towards household income but I was supporting my own children. Their mum would have been under the maximum at the time. Unfair system.

I agree , UCAS offer so many useless courses with no future prospects . My daughter did biomed first then did medicine so as a second degree got no help financially so it fell to us . I wouldn’t have agreed to pay had she wanted to do ancient Egyptology or philosophy!

It’s going to stop the families from the poorest families from even going to university. And it’s going to make middle income families use their savings to keep their children afloat . Just another way in which the rich and super rich can access things that are becoming increasingly difficult for middle and poorest families. The wealth divide in this country is obscene, so while the very rich have access to all the resources available, the poorest are excluded by the very system that is supposed to improve their life chances. Very soon the middle income families won’t be able to support their children & only the elite will have access to further education

As parents we should get tax relief on paying living expenses! My son only got the minimum and I basically worked to keep him there. He now has a 50k debt (and his fiancé the same) that actually just increases even though he’s paying it off, so yes they should worry about the loan as a whole!!!. He wouldn’t go to Uni if he had his time again

I went to uni almost 20yrs ago, my parents earnt just over the threshold so no grants for me. I had to work from the age of 16, in my 1st yr I had to commute every week so I could work on weekends, 2nd yr managed to only work holidays but worked every shift I could get. In hindsight I was still lucky my Dad would sometimes drop me to uni and do the occasional shop but I had to stretch my money.

Unless you want to be a doctor, dentist or vet, or the experience, then why on earth would anybody want to go to Uni full time?

Get a job and work over summer and part time in semester….. it’s quite simple. Did this while on minimum maintenance loan and living in Oxford (most expensive out of London)

I currently have 4 children at university. I started saving when each of them was born. They got £250 child trust fund from the government and I just kept adding to it. Birthdays, Christmas and I also divided the child benefit into 4 every month and deposited it. They each ended up with a nice wee nest egg to live off and I now dont have to worry about paying 4 lots of allowance to them all. If there’s any advice I can give to new parents. It’s start saving now. Every little helps.

Not only its means tested but it’s based on household income not parent’s income. So if mum or dad is on 25k but their partner earn let’s say 40k, that means that the student cannot get more that £4950 a year for their maintenance loan if they live away from home.

The explanation for student loans is that those who are the poorest need the most help.

We have 3 children and this isn’t taken into account. We were in no position to save at all when they were younger and only now on decent combined salary. I’m not opposed to them working ( I did when I was a student and from age 14) but the expectation that parents can pay so much is unreasonable and unrealistic.
