@ncolphillip: I went to Panamá City ready to see Black folks everywhere, but I couldn’t find them in the popular tourist areas and didn’t know where else to look. People kept telling me I had to leave the city to see the Black population, but I was like na. No way there are that few Black people in Panamá City given the history of the canal. So I talked to my homegirl who also happens to be a public historian of Black history in the Americas and the confounder of @AfroLatinxTravel (a group that leads tours in Latin America focused on the history of afrodescendents) @Dash had me shook during our conversation and then my own research led to be some disappointing revelations about Panamá City’s Black history. To be clear, this video isn’t encouraging people not to visit the city, but you know I like to give y’all the real real. _ #blackhistoryiseveryday #panamacitypanama #blacklatino #blacktravelfeed #tiktokpartner
This explains so much why Colón gets neglected. Colón should be another economic city center for Panama. ESPECIALLY being right next to the Panama Canal's north gateway.

Gold Roll and Silver Roll division wasn't only based in color, the only ones paid by the Gold Roll were white american citizens, the rest of the workers in the Canal were assigned to the Silver Roll. Even though most of the workers were black from caribbean Islands, also a lot of europeans, asians and panamanians worked in the construction of the Canal and all of them were under the Silver Roll.

sorry about the gaslighters in the comments, your video is awesome. people have been brainwashed from the “crisol de razas” propaganda, which taught us that there is no racism in panama. we are diverse, but wealth is not distributed equally among ethnic groups. you can see it in our city, our schools, our neighborhoods. we even have white supremacist and elitist clubs like club union completely normalized. we have been raised to turn a blind eye on the racism around us.

So Panama is basically like the USA where property developers are buying up everything and causing property prices to skyrocket so high that even some middle class people can’t afford them. Plus of course the poor can’t even find reasonably priced apartments anywhere.

It was crazy to me that entire neighborhoods had no water or electricity until a few years ago… AFTER they were pushed out and American/European investors started gentrification. All of a sudden they started making repairs to the infrastructure. I did a different tour but got similar info. I would love to take this one next time to learn more.

idk, i don’t think it is fair to look at panama’s situation from an united states lens. it is not the same. panama is way more heavily divided by classism rather than racism. although i won’t argue that these often come hand in hand, it is not the same as in the US. latin american social standings are very different and they must be analyzed by said lens.
