Flow is a concept outlined by Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi to describe the state of producing work in a way that feels effortless and elicits great happiness and contentment. It's a formal distillation of the concept of being "in the zone" and it's a core value in the Flow Arts. So how do you experience Flow? Here's what Csikszentmihalyi has to say on the topic: 1. Eliminate Distractions. Allow yourself to focus on the task at hand. Turn your phone notifications off. Turn off the TV. Put on noise canceling headphones. This will allow you to be fully present, focused, and able to concentrate on the task ahead of you. 2. Achieve Inner Clarity. Set a goal so you know exactly what needs to be accomplished and you have a means to measure how well you're doing the task or achieving the skill. 3. Match Challenge and Skill. To achieve flow, you must know that the task ahead of you is achievable. Too difficult and it risks triggering anxiety. Too easy and it may cause boredom. Flow is most likely to occur in situations where you know your skills are equal to the task before you. 4. Engage Actively rather than Passively. You're more likely to experience flow when engaging in an activity that requires skill rather than watching TV or scrolling your phone--both of which are more passive forms of engagement. This means that said skill must be honed and practiced over time. 5. Push Limits. Stretch what you believe you are capable of. Reach just past your comfort zone and you may discover new capabilities get unlocked when you focus and apply yourself. Doing these things can result in moments when we feel a kind of ecstasy, timelessness, and/or are motivated to perform a task for the sheer point of doing the task rather than extrinsic forms of motivation.
