I accidentally read this when I was 11. The two things which got to me were his obsession with the 45 degree angle and when she feels upset about the blotches on her legs. There's so much in those two moments which I didn't realise at the time.

I don’t think the lesson was about trust in institutions at all. The lesson was, as it was in so much media similar at the time, that nuclear war was an indiacriminate existential threat to humanity. If they didn’t trust they’re fate wouldn’t have been different.

Why don’t you mention the creator of the graphic novel the film was based on? Raymond Briggs was heavily involved in production. He wrote the original graphic novel that the film is based on, and also worked closely with the filmmakers during its production. Specifically, he served as the author, illustrator, and provided input on the film's development.
