@lthlnkso: Is AI water usage going to destroy the world? (No) #AI #DataCenters #ArtificialIntelligence #FactCheck #environment #Weather @DecodedProgramming This guy thinks whether anomalies are caused by water usage at AI data centers. I disagree. I think the amount of water used by AI data centers is relatively small compared to general water use or water that falls from rain so I don’t think the small amount of water usage is going to change the weather. I do think there are serious problems that artificial intelligence may cause, but I don’t think the environment is related at all.
I just don’t understand why AI needs to drink water. My GPU is liquid cooled in my gaming PC but I almost never need to refill that thing

can't data centers use closed loop cooling? you don't have to evaporate the water to cool something. cars go years cooling with the same fluid...

wild that so many people agreed with him, as if climate change alarm bells havent been being sounded by scientists for decades

not that I support or condone OP's original premise (I agree it's silly), but taking the average rainfall for the state, gallons of rainwater per acre for 1 inch of rainfall, and then multiplying that all by the total land area is a pretty rough way to go about that. average rainfall in Texas is based on only about 800 discrete collection points, and they are fairly biased towards urban and agricultural areas. so, that figure is likely drastically lower if there were more collection points distributed in some of the more sparse areas. I get we're just kind of spitballing here, though. Just pointing it out...

the water doesn't evaporate. it's pumped through pipes which warm up and the water flows through the pipes. and is pumped back out a bit warmer. if

Also why are we suddenly caring about it now that it’s AI? Me and everybody else have been using cloud storage services for years now. I’m sure that consumes a bunch of electricity and cooling??

This feels over simplified. If it rains in Texas why are there droughts?

I find it interesting that these people’s focus is on AI specifically, and not data centers in general. I believe this is in large part due to a subconscious god-complex, where the idea of technology outpacing human intelligence threatens people’s own sense of self worth.

The factor that you aren’t accounting for it the amount of water being vaporized outside of natural pathways. This is a lot of water from that viewpoint. Is it changing weather patterns like he is saying. Probably not but it isn’t insignificant

you miss maybe the most nefarious danger from a.i., creating a world where all our needs and wants and desires are instantaneously met, turning humans into useless puddles of goo completely unable to perform even the most basic of tasks or make coherent thought anymore. this may seem like what people want in the short term, but the long term effects are disastrous and likely mean the end of humanity

Correct me if i’m wrong but AI doesn’t actually create things, it just references and organizes things for you right? Thats fundamentally different from intelligence. How could that ever pose a threat if it cannot create something new!

And water cooling for computers is A CLOSED SYSTEM. That's like saying cars are "using water". How often do you add water to your car? 🤣

It takes hundreds of gallons of water to produce a single gallon of milk. If you’re really concerned about water usage, you should give up dairy. Not AI.

evaporated cooling water doesn't go into the air. it goes into a water chamber and is reused and/or returned to the sewage system. computer cooling is generally a closed loop, but letting the steam go into the air is inefficient, using pressureized piping is far more effective.

I’m not a huge AI guy but it’s so disingenuous and frustrating how so many articles use the raw number of gallons of water instead of a percentage of total usage
