I agree with you, but I don't think cancel culture is the reason. Cancel culture is incredibly useful for actual problematic people. It's perfection politics. Expecting your candidate to 100% align with your own values or finding someone who has nothing problematic in their past.

I think that the performative perfectionism pushed a lot of moderate people away because people don’t want to feel like everything they do is wrong especially if they’re not intentionally trying to be malicious, and the right capitalized on it because they embraced them and gave them a space where they can be flawed.

Here before the leftists that love to say "I don't want them to be better, I dont care if they've changed, I don't want bigots to support me" etc. All the people who are so blinded by outrage and a need to feel morally superior that they completely forget how the political system works and actively fight AGAINST their own interests. I FULLY agree with the idea of horseshoe theory. I'm not a centrist, but I do see where the idea that the far right and far (emphasis on FAR) left behave in eerily similar ways, the only difference is who the target of their ire is
