as a player. I try to do this deliberately sometimes to force character interactions with the shyer players. because EVERYONE deserves to be in a spotlight even if they don't think they want it because they always tend to say how much they enjoyed sessions I force it in (Dms fear me 💀)

agreed ... itt shifts the dynamic, also bonus, it allows you to use cool but Low CR enemies at higher level play and keep it balanced.

A lot of the time this just happens during role-playing areas for campaigns I've been in, but a few times it's been a the way split in the road to find something and we were to meet back up after an hour or two.

I have same pc’s that optimized and some still learning their class features and spells, so I feel like splitting can really throw a cool curveball to them and make their combats feel more difficult

I love a good “split party arc” especially in my writing, there’s nothing better than two characters who could not be more different on the surface sharing a quiet moment together by themselves on the rooftop of a diner (it’s like fantasy alfresco!) and coming away from that conversation knowing more about each other than most people they know XD

Also when you put certain characters together, they may make different decisions than they would have if they were still with the entite party. Your party may make good decisions together, but a couple of them may make a stupid/immoral decision when split. I use it to help highlight dynamics and character flaws/strengths.

two different campaigns I've had split groups recently. Mothership I had two groups in two locations, one hacking something and another monitoring a party member on a date with a very bad person (long story). The other was DCC where the party got split into 3 following these cultists into different areas of a dungeon. what followed was a very complicated triple initiative. flexed my game running in ways I've never done before there.

So real, but if anything lasts more than. Like half a session, I DO think you need to talk to your DM about it bc having to run 2 (or more) different things without the exact group you were expecting can be stresfull and put a lot more work on them
