@harrisondtran: This is the 1st recipe I ever shared, back when only my personal friends were following along. I started making videos as a way to practice using my voice as an instrument and get over my self-consciousness from having a lisp as a kid. I wanted to share it again because I am starting a new chapter in NYC and very soon, a new series, called “Feed your Feelings”, that intertwines cooking with personal reflection - the same way that this recipe reflected the jigsaw puzzle of my identity at the time I created it 🥹 It’s been about two years since I first shared this, and I hope my new friends here enjoy it if they haven’t scrolled all the way to the bottom of my reels 😂 Việt-Texas BBQ ☄️ Soursop + Durian Pork Belly Burnt End Bánh Rán • Translations from the video: - Bánh Rán/Bánh Cam = lightly sweet Vietnamese fried pastry made with glutinous rice flower, mung bean filling, and covered in sesame seeds - Mãng Cầu = soursop - Sầu Riêng = durian - Đồ Chua = pickled carrots + daikon 🥣 Ingredients Dough: • 16 oz glutinous rice flour • 8 oz rice flour • 1 cup sugar • 2 tbsp baking powder • 2.5 cups water • 2/3 cup mashed potato flakes • 1/4 cup untoasted sesame seeds Pork Belly Burnt Ends: • 1 lb pork belly • 1 cup choice seasoning (salt, pepper, cayenne, garlic, paprika, onion powder in video) • 2 cups BBQ sauce • 2 cups mashed fruit (soursop and durian in video) 🧾Instructions Pork Belly Burnt Ends: 1. Cut pork belly into 1.5” cubes then coat in seasooing. 2. Smoke at 250° F for 3 hours or until bark is deep mahogany. 3. Transfer pork belly to pan, then add BBQ sauce and fruit. 4. Wrap in foil and cook at 250° F for 2 hours or until internal temp is 200º F and meat is probe tender. 5. Unwrap and cook at 275° F for 30 minutes to caramelize sauce. Bánh Rán: 1. Combine glutinous rice flour and rice flour. 2. dissolve sugar and baking powder in water. 3. Mix mashed potato flakes into fluid. 4. Slowly and fully combine fluid with flour to form dough. 5. Keep water handy to prevent dough cracking. 6. Take one golf ball piece of dough and flatten. 7. Place burnt end in the center, then cup with hand. 8. Slowly work edges to connect into a ball. 9. Coat in sesame seeds. 10. Fry in 350° F coconut oil until golden. 11. Allow to cool, then enjoy! #vietnamesefood #vietnamesecuisine #cookingdiary

I felt the same way! It wasn’t until I moved to NYC that I started tapping into my viet culture. Now I try to cook for my friends all the viet dishes my mom cooked for me.
