actually the event did start as planned but organisers pulled the plug and instructed everyone to return from however far they had gotten. The effect is much the same, if you've trained for a certain event then it sucks if it's cancelled or shortened, so I feel for those people, but sometimes considering the weather conditions you've just got to know when to bail, I think that's especially important in ultra distance cos things can always change over such long distances

How awful. I almost had a similar experience with the Cheaha Challenge. Ride was delayed by an hour with torrential rain and close lightning strikes. It cleared up enough to send us on our merry way only for a second storm to hit around the 60 mile mark for me. Lightning everywhere on the mountain and no cover. Everyone was OK but it was terrifying. Good call by the organizers
