I was taught something completely different. I was told you throw it in the water on your last underway. If it floats, you reenlist and if it sinks you get tf out. Hence the weights 😂😂

I didn't get to experience that, nor did ever seen anybody do that. but chiefs and officers got their boots shot off from the catapult when retired.
