Rats are actually very cute and friendly pets. They tend to be loyal to their main caretaker.

Another study on this by Combs, Matthew et al 2017 discusses possible landscape heterogeneity in brown rats within urban environments ( New York for the study) . A horror movie to also I recommend is Mulberry St. (2006) for a rat zombie-virus style apocalypse.

My first trip to NYC involved me seeing a rat the size of a house cat walking with a full slice of pizza in its mouth.

I'm fairly sure my musophobia comes from watching the 1971 film "Willard", on late night TV, at the age of 7. The high fever from a bout of flu I was suffering from at the time didn't help.

Urban environments affect evolution; rat populations in two widely separated urban areas are more like each other than the rats in one city are similar to rats in its surrounding countryside.

we've actually got a lepto issue at one of my jobs thanks to management ignoring our invasive rat issue, but I still can't help but respect how tenacious they are. Meanwhile, the melomys I help with elsewhere are fat, lazy gremlins and can't handle getting their morning fruit late (then there's the absolutely feral white tails 😬)

Ferrets are an option. Domestic cats tend to leave adult rats a lone .That said I did see a cat attack a Great Pyrenees today. The dog did not care.Farrel cats go after rabbits at times. Jack rabbits will charge a barn cat.

My siblings had a rat that was retired from the laboratory of Prosser John Osmond of Purdue University circa 1955. It was unusually resistant to warfare .
