@internet.anthropology: What is the future of a field with such a troubling past? Appologise for what I’ve missed - please add it in the comments below #internetanthropology #anthrotok #anthropology #anthropologistsyoushouldknow
fellow anthropologist here - I think it's really important to remember the colonial history of anthropology! and also from most of sciences (socials and naturals)

The best way to change something is to recognize the problem! Anthropology is well-poised to really fix some things right now.

It's always interesting to me how closely botany and anthropology are historically related. Almost identical shared history.

This information was the foundation of my anthro courses and I never saw it in a history class in college. All fields should acknowledge this context so practices like medicine, public administration, environmental services improve continuously for everyone.

All true. BUT I wouldn’t call ethnocentralism proper anthropology. Can’t truly document when totally biased.

Agreed. That’s why I prefer critical ethnography as a research methodology over conventional/traditional ethnography for it’s been complicit in the Euro-Anglo imperial project.

In an anthropology class I took at uni, we studied a piece that used what had been considered the "traditional language" of anthropology to describe regular western modern behaviors like brushing teeth. It was extremely effective at demonstrating how that outlook, approach and language deliberately alienated both the writer and reader from the culture they are trying to understand. It was at once a demonstration of anthropology's history and the experience of being unfairly othered by a colonial power to Western students (Australians). It was an example of what should not be done or written today. A master stroke by the lecturer honestly.
