Rule 114:
In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.

The way I see it is why have you foot on the clutch if you don’t need to. It’s Mutch cheaper to tighten the hand brake then the clutch so don’t use the clutch if you don’t have too. 3 second rule

@CHELSEA 💙: When it’s a red light and I’ve just missed the cycle and hv to wait for ages I put the handbrake on. Means my foot doesn’t need to be on the clutch!!! Bit of rest lmao

My instructor tells me to put the handbrake up at lights so I have my feet ready when I move off

Good practice to use handbrake if you stop at zebra and people are crossing, other then that it’s a parking brake

Can someone help me: if I have a petrol car do I need to add gas when reversing or will clutch be enough. I have heard that using clutch only will burn it

What about if you stop on a hill. Do you put the handbrake on or can you use clutch control?

Keeping the foot brake applied dazzles the drivers behind especially at night, applied the handbrake if you know it’s going to be more than a few seconds doesn’t take much to be courteous.

Whilst I agree you don’t need to put it on all the time, there are other times other than parking you should use it. If first in the queue at a pedestrian crossing I suggest using it, then if you are rear ended you’re not getting pushed into a load of pedestrians. Everyone teaches slightly differently but a lot of it is using common sense and always picking the safest option.

The highway code says you should so you don't dazzle other road users at night, but also you should for safety. If stopped for a period of time keeping you foot on the clutch and break can lead to fatigue especially in new drivers. one's foot can easily slip off the clutch and brake potentially causing a collision with the car ahead. also so if you get rear-ended, the handbrake being applied will stop you going as far forward limiting the impact. Alongside the safety reasons, it also assists the driver in pulling away as the driver can use both feet to find the biting point with clutch and accelerator whilst using their hand to release the handbrake minimising roll black on any inclines.

The town that I did my test in has a really busy 4 way junction that can take up to 20 mins for the light to go green on the lane you're on, so in that situation I do put the car in neutral and pull the handbrake. It's the only place I've been where I'm willing to do that.

You also need to put it on when you do an emergency stop.

As an Instructor 12 years ago I was sat in a test centre , big chat on this and I was the only teaching this then , they all disagreed with me and told me you must you the handbrake of stopped for more that 2 seconds, anyway they continued you exclude me in the conversations as I was obviously not teaching right , all the tests came back , mine passed and the other 6 failed , doesn't mean it was on the handbrake, but don't judge a book by it's cover , so I totally agree with you 😎

I have recently started using the handbrake whenever I stop because I was struggling with clutch control at traffic lights etc, will I fail my test for that?

The irony of the Highway Code telling us we shouldn’t dazzle people at night with brake lights yet we have these insane LED headlights which are brighter than the sun.

So if I’m at a light and there’s people behind me already no I hold the bite and wait however if I’m first at the light and there’s no sign of people behind me I’ll put my hand bake on because if I get rear ended I won’t fly into the junction but I will also do it to give my legs a brake if I’ve been driving all day

I was taught to use the handbrake, 13 years ago. I passed first time. I’m sorry, but I think this information is wrong. Unless it’s changed since I did it, I don’t drive like that now don’t get me wrong but you learn what’s best for you as you go along. As far as the test goes, just do whatever they tell you to do on lessons just ask what they will want on the test

There is a set of lights in Southampton that stay red for around 5 minutes. Can you honestly say you would sit there in gear with your footbrake on for that amount of time. I think not. Also my stop start doesn’t activate if it’s not in neutral with handbrake on. You are creating lazy drivers.
