I’m worth a gallon of ale in old England? That’s neat!

In my world the coins are the size and shape of a single dragon scale (which were often used in trade before coinage became standardized. Also a group of the oldest living metallic dragons got together some time in the past and created a bank each branch of which is run by one of their decendants. They are the oldest and largest bank in the world and mint their own coins which are accepted everywhere. The Five Flames Bank is better known as The Horde and is a neutral party outside of politics and the strife that normally befalls the different kingdoms.

Another interesting detail you could add could be smaller kingdoms near large kingdoms would often replicate the coins of their larger neighbors but they would make the coins out of what ever metals were more available localy in 1600-1800 hundreds south east Asia you can see lots of copies of imperial Chinese coins cast in tin or lead rather than bronze these would be legal tender in the small kingdom but it would be a crime to try use them in the larger kingdom.

I was toying with a world building concept where most countries and people used specific type of crystal as currency due to its relatively convenient and unique nature. the crystals could be 'grown' and consumed by magic users giving them inherent value but also could stick to each other and if enough of a given type were stuck together they would fold in a fractal manner into each other as a higher tier crystal. The tactile sensation being something akin to magnet style fidget toys.

As a kid I watched Newsies and created my own math textbook problem to solve. I saw them buy 50 papers for 2 bits, and I knew it was 2 for a penny, so they paid 25 cents, meaning a bit is worth 12.5 cents. And now it makes sense… a bit in Newsies is 1/8th of a $1, and a bit in ye old England is 1/8th of a penny 🤷♀️this is not really relevant, but I got really excited when I made the connection lol 😅

One of my favorte pieces of world building was in Name of the Wind describing trapezoid shaped coins that were that way because the originals were made from sliced up metal ingots and the shape stuck even for modern ones made in a press

For like a home town situation local businesses should have a ledger of what you owe while travelers are expected to pay in coin.

there are also some really interesting articles on how the use of currency was related to the centralization of the state, and the state's ability to levy taxes. see also the petrodollar, SWIFT, etc

That's a really good way to go about it. functional for form. I thought about different counting structures that are unique to certain groups, and religious and symbolism based math sets for currency. But you raise the mighty fine point.

It makes me think of the currency in the Stormlight Archive books. They are somewhat inconvenient, being glass spheres, and kind of complicated since there are three sizes of 10 types of gems, all with a different value.

I have a spreadsheet that calculates the size of various shaped coins with various size and shaped holes in the middle. I used 3.5e for the mass of the coin to see the volume I was working with.

not-so-fun fact about Japan's early silver and gold currencies is that it was considered "immature" by other countries, because the exchange rates between silver and gold skewed to overvalue silver when compared to global exchange rates, so foreign trade companies flocked to Japan to trade silver for gold in such high amounts that it crashed their economy

until modern systems, currency was made for nobles and merchants, no the general population.

I added the idea to my setting that a standard coin was always the same weight, to the point that '50 coins' became the standard of measure, a Coinweight. This was implemented as proof against counterfeiting (any coin should balance any other) and proved to have added benefits beyond.

Nicknames for the currency also helps with versamillitude. Dollar is a buck, 5 dollars is a fiver, five-spot, 100;is a Benjamin, so on
