He later transitioned into the private sector and public service, eventually becoming the Governor of Katsina State in 1999 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). His two-term tenure as governor was noted for policy reforms in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, earning him a reputation for humility, integrity, and transparency. In 2007, Yar’Adua emerged as the consensus candidate of the PDP and was declared winner of the presidential elections, succeeding President Olusegun Obasanjo. As president, he introduced a 7-point agenda aimed at reforming key sectors such as power, infrastructure, and education. One of his most notable actions was the granting of amnesty to Niger Delta militants in 2009, a move that significantly reduced unrest in the oil-producing region. However, his presidency was challenged by persistent health issues, which led to a prolonged absence from office.
