You need to use a needle or something small to push down the valve and release some air from the lighter, then you can fill it :)

I insert the butane when the lighter is right side up and then flip it upside down and push! Also my lighters have a dial to control the strength of the flame so I turn that all the way down to the lowest setting before filling!
