Almost every time I host I need to consider how to serve a guest with food allergies. Over the years, I have loved seeing the reactions from these guests when I say, “you can eat this too [and it won’t make you sick].” Making that extra thing (gluten free chicken and dumplings for instance) brings them so much joy and an opportunity to try a version of a food that they haven’t been able to before. Here is my go to menu for allergen friendly hosting. Other than making sure the tortilla chips and tortillas are gluten-free, & subbing the sour cream & ice cream for a plant based alternative, I don’t have to worry about substitutions for my friends with food allergies. If I was doing a more casual party I would do a taco bar and may offer some options such as cheese and flour tortillas for people to choose from. Appetizers: Guacamole, salsa, & gluten-free tortilla chips First: Chicken Tortilla soup Second/Main: Carne asada tacos with cilantro crema (made with plant based sour cream, cilantro, lime juice, paprika, & salt) topped with shredded green cabbage. Served with homemade black beans and Mexican rice on the side Dessert: Cinnamon sugar tortilla chips served with dairy free ice cream & horchata on the side The FDA requires labeling of common allergens including fish, eggs, wheat, nuts, soy, and dairy. People may have allergies that aren’t included in this list (coconut, tomatoes, chocolate, red wine, avocados are some of the ones I’ve had to consider), so always ask when you’re hosting someone new 💕 #hostinyourhome #allergenfriendly
