At high heat, minerals in the glaze melt together and form zinc silicate crystals into the beautiful patterns in this video. Contrary to popular crystals growing processes, these crystals do not require a "seed" to grow form. The glaze contains a high amount of Zinc, silica, and other fluxes which melt and combine together at 2000 degrees creating a glassy uniform surface. It is oxidation fired for 12 hours with a 3 hour hold in a electric temperature controlled kiln. The nucleation phase happens naturally at peak firing temperatures and the growth stage occurs after dropping the temperature down to 1950F. Holding the temperature at varying temps will yield different types of crystal growth, many artists will have custom firing schedules to achieve multiple ring like crystals similar to the growth rings found in tree stumps. Because of this process, each piece becomes one of a kind, almost like growing gemstones in the heat of a volcano. #fyp #ceramics #sunday #glaze
