THE SCOPE OF DIFFERENCE [5:6] A single letter in the Qur’an can shape Islamic law! Islamic civilisation is unique. From the time of the Prophet ﷺ, it created space for multiple truths to coexist within the same religion. That might sound strange. Even contradictory. But it’s one of Islam’s most beautiful features. Islam has always held this principle: core truths are fixed — the details can differ. Two people may act differently on the same issue… And both may be right. This isn’t just theory. It’s embedded in the Qur’an itself — even in the smallest of letters. Take the letter ب in the verse we explored last video: وَٱمْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ “…wipe over your heads…” (Sūrah al-Mā’idah, 5:6) All Muslims agree wudū’ is required for prayer. All agree the head must be wiped. But how much of the head must be wiped? That’s where the difference begins — rooted in Qur’ān, ḥadīth, and legal reasoning — all stemming from this letter ب: Mālikīs and Ḥanbalīs say the ب is superfluous — so the entire head must be wiped. Shāfiʿīs say it implies partialness — so even a single hair suffices. Ḥanafīs agree the ب means some, but use hadith to specify one quarter of the head — specifically the forelock. One letter. Three interpretations. All valid. And this ability to hold difference? It began with the Prophet ﷺhimself. In one incident, he said: “Do not pray ʿAṣr until you reach Banū Qurayẓah.” Some companions delayed the prayer. Others prayed earlier. When they returned and explained — the Prophet ﷺaffirmed both. They were both correct! So why allow this difference? Because he ﷺtaught that difference of opinion is a mercy. People will differ — in understanding, context, and background. And Islam has the depth to honour that difference without fracturing unity. But these aren’t differences in fundamentals. We all believe in: One God The finality of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ The Qur’an as the word of Allah ﷻ These pillars are non-negotiable. But within them — there’s space to differ, with evidence and care. So here’s the real lesson: Difference doesn’t mean division. It means divine design. Unity through diversity. And for anyone starting their journey in dīn — don’t fall into the trap of thinking only one view is right. Don’t become the haram police! Our religion is vast. It was built to contain difference. A true scholar doesn’t just tell you what’s wrong — They show you what’s right — and why. That’s what A Legal Look is here to reveal: how Islamic law is derived — and why difference is part of its wisdom. #ALegalLook #IslamicLaw #QuranicNuance #DifferenceIsMercy #UnityThroughDiversity #FiqhWisdom #BLetterBigImpact #IslamicTradition #WudhuUnderstanding #RespectDifference #SunnahOfUnderstanding #SacredLaw #QuranReflection #DepthOfDeen #OneUmmahManyPaths #ScholarshipNotJudgement #MercyInDifference #ShariahExplained #DivineDesign #PropheticWisdom
