I’m just amazed that nobody got hurt because it was truly a lawsuit waiting to happen

This must have been a fire hazard. I was there early and tried to queue but was absorbed into the huge crowd of people on floor 2. No organisation no guidence. Alarms went off more than once but there was no way to move.

Something needs to change- this event felt SO unsafe!!! No signage, floor 2 was BOILING and no one controlling the crowds. I was very disappointed!!

It was so badly organised. I’m sorry but never again. No one in any of the queues actually knew what they were queuing for and all the authors were shoved into corners so we had to fight our way through just to get our stuff signed. Queues for everything should have been established a lot better or the authors should have been on a separate floor.

Worst book event I have ever been to. Unsafe, with fire exits blocked. Massively over capacity. Disabled attendees mobbed and crowded with no assistance. Zero staff presence from Waterstones. Do better.

I’ve never been so disappointed, awfully organised. Staff seemed to give up and no one knew what queue was for what. If it happens next year, it really needs to be better thought out x

I’m so sorry guys but it felt like there was no Waterstones presence and that wasn’t fair on the publishers who were struggling to manage queues, this genuinely felt like an unsafe event and I wouldn’t attend if it was held next year💔 so disappointed after hearing so many amazing reviews about last year! Xx

I went there early, got overwhelmed by the amount of people and all the shoving so I left empty handed. 😭

Yeah…no. Not ready. A map with publishers would have been useful (queued for an hour in the wrong queue!) - had to go round 15 minutes looking for someone to tell me where the panels were because it wasn’t on the flyer - I feel bad for the publishers as they must have felt so overwhelmed!

As an event planner & book dragon I was so excited to attend this as my first book event! Sadly I was so disappointed, it was absolute chaos & dangerous with the amount of people & queuing on the stairs. with no signage or clear queuing system. Anyone with access needs must have found it impossible to navigate!

The book community has MASSIVELY grown over the past few years, especially this past year I’ve noticed way more people joining this previous years. I understand that you might have underestimated how many people would attend but if you’re advertising an event and you’re the UK’s biggest bookstore in central London of all places, I seriously don’t know what you expected.

The authors, publishers and guests deserved better than the hell you put us through today. Complete lack of planning for easily foreseeable circumstances

This was my first and most likely last time to bookfest! I don’t understand why an event as big as this lacked any organisation. Have a map at the entrance with exactly where publishers are, have queue systems for people to go one way and out another and then close the store completely for shoppers as so many people skipped the queues saying that they were just there to buy and not for boogest.

Hi Waterstones appreciate that only one person organises this event and it’s hard to do (so I appreciate their work) but can it maybe be considered ticketing this event, the way people were pushing this year was dangerous at points and queue cutting was CRAZY 😭 it’s not your fault people push but it’s a shame for those who have waited

The most poorly organised event I’ve ever attended. Idk how you allowed so many people in the store, left the AC off, had no one on the floor to help crowd control or any clear signage. I’m very sorry to everyone who went: the readers, the publishers, the authors, it wasn’t fair.

I feel sorry for the staff and the publishers and authors because this was just the most awful and chaotic event I have ever been to! No one seemed to know about the sunflower lanyard scheme or what the access card was, there was no help for those with disabilities at all and me and my friend had to leave after an hour 😭 I really looked forward to this event and it was horrific, it was just wasn’t managed safely at all and I don’t think you guys expected it to be anything of this scale! We got verbally assaulted by someone for “queue jumping” even though we had an access card, a sunflower lanyard and assistance from a member of staff 😫😭

worst experience i have ever had. aside from 1 sign telling you what was on each floor, there was no direction of where the publishers were on each floor. The queues were massive inside, barely any room to move. poorly organised and executed. Make this a ticketed event, better signage on every level and manage number better.

The way I have a bruise on my hip because of being shoved into a table from BookFest. Did you want feedback on how the bruise is doing?
