if you grew up abroad and then come back home, never form or act like you are better than them because the moment you do that. you won't get that welcome you seek. Nigerians don't joke with that.

Olu Mide :
Sorry we didn't roll out the red carpet for you at the airport auntie. Lol. But I do understand that expectation and then the attendant disappointment. Thing is, people treated you the way they would treat anybody else. Cool, you're one of us even though your tongue is different but sorry, you're not special. Once they come to know you though and see that you embrace the culture, they'd totally treat you like you are indeed special.

A native language is part of a culture. Without it you can't actually fit in 100%.

Lessons for parents who don’t teach their kids the mother tongue. My son speaks Igbo. He’s half Italian but I made sure he learned. He can speak Italian and French but Igbo was first. He might speak any other tongue but Igbo was a must

Language is a big barrier in the African community especially in the West of Africa. Eating food and wearing clothes isn’t considered special, it’s the ability to interact verbally with your people 😄

As a non Nigerian who understands Yoruba..no one taught me. I learned out of love for the culture and people. Just like how you can study another language you can learn your own.

I was born an raised in Nigeria and I do not know how to speak ibo cos my parents raised us speaking English, and i was treated like she was too. So I understand what she is talking about. It's just our way, if you can go past that, you just ignore the little cheeky jabs from people. It took me a while to realise it was love and not abuse when I was teased for not able to speak ibo. Still haven't learnt btw at 48, and wish I do so I can pass to my kids.
