@fly.goldseal: A Magneto uses a permanent magnet to generate an electrical current completely independent of the aircraft’s electrical system. The Magneto generates sufficiently high voltage to create an electric arc across the spark plug’s gap in each cylinder. The system begins to fire when the starter is engaged and the crankshaft begins to turn. It continues to operate whenever the crankshaft is rotating. It’s the turning of the crankshaft that causes the magneto to send a current to the spark plugs for firing. That being said, each magneto has a ground wire that allows you to disconnect them from the system. Without a ground wire, even if you turned the key to the “off” position, the engine would continue to run. Even on the ground, with the engine off, this could still cause other problems. If the ground wire is disconnected… and there’s fuel in the cylinders, a turn of the prop could inadvertently start the engine. 🧲 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - #flygoldseal #studentpilot #flighttraining #groundschool #flightinstructor #privatepilot #learntofly #pilottraining #flightschool #generalaviation #cfi #magneto #engines
