This movie is a must watch for anyone with a soul, a child or who simply struggles to navigate life's daily struggles: an aging parent, an apathetic education system, unresolved trauma. It is utterly devastating yet also undeniably uplifting. So many young adolescents are forced to survive on the streets where so-called adults will victimize them without a second thought. And yet so few conscientious bystanders will actually take action on their behalf. The scene that literally broke me is when Henry (Adrien Brody) takes a teenage prostitute named Erica (Sami Gayle) into his apartment because she's hungry. Her face is bruised from an old man who hit her on a bus the previous night, and he quickly notices her inner thigh is bleeding because she was clearly raped by another man. Yet despite enduring such horrific abuse, she briefly misconstrues his concern for her welfare for making a pass and wanting sex - which she quickly exclaims will cost him $100. She was so utterly broken - detached - she no longer had any regard for her own safety or self-worth. Absolutely heartbreaking. Some people are perpetually angry or in trouble with the law because they've never known love or kindness. That's why when Erica said, "you're good and gentle, the most kind, I love you, Henry" as child protection services took her away from the only person that truly cared about her, I absolutely bawled. Hug your daughters and be the individual who cares for others, whether they are family or complete strangers. In the meantime, watch this timeless and incredibly poignant film. Adrien and Sami give brilliant performances you'll never forget!
