I think him meeting Micah was his wake up call that he's not a good man. Never was. He helped folk in tough situations and they joined the gang, but it then turned into him enjoying the thrill of that leadership. that power. that drive. in rdr1 he explained he truly believed he was like that by nature and didn't change because he believed it was "a paradox". He believed it so. I truly think he did care, but he also believed he was bad man and chose to not change. I also think he was mentally unwell in some way. His way of thinking was odd. He had moments of doubt and confusion in himself when things didn't go the way he wanted. I think the failure also must've got to him. Just like the failure of blackwater at the beginning of the game.
