But isn’t that the whole point of any career. You either pay with time or money to get more opportunities. If you in corporate marketing for example and want to be known and get better opportunities you have to show up in places you might have to pay for. Or am I missing something??

its the way it is now. When before magazines would pay you to be in them. Print doesn't make the money it used to when every magazine was in every store, so they got to make money somehow. Movie premieres you dont always have to pay for, one of my good friends parents work very high up in the film industry and he gets to go to movie after parties, premeries etc. Its sometimes just about who you know and network with.
